The town has a long and rich history, dating back to the Roman era, when it was an important center for trade and commerce. We had the chance to visit this charming village during our stay in Portugal.<\/p>\n<p>During the Middle Ages, Viana do Castelo grew in importance as a port town, and it played a crucial role in Portugal&#8217;s Age of Discovery in the 15th and 16th centuries. Many of the town&#8217;s historic buildings date back to this period, including the <strong>Cathedral of St. Mary the Great<\/strong> (Viana do Castelo Cathedral), which was built in the 15th century, and the Renaissance-style Town Hall, which was built in the 16th century.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most famous legends associated with Viana do Castelo is the legend of the Princess of Viana. According to the legend, in the 15th century, a beautiful princess named Joana was in love with a knight from Castile. However, her father, the king of Portugal, forbade the relationship and arranged for Joana to marry a Portuguese nobleman. The princess was so heartbroken that she fell ill and died soon after her wedding. The legend says that her ghost still haunts the castle where she lived, and that she appears to lovers who come to the castle seeking her blessing.<\/p>\n<p>Another famous legend associated with Viana do Castelo is the legend of the Rooster of Barcelos.\u00a0According to the legend, a pilgrim on his way to Santiago de Compostela was accused of stealing a silver rooster from a local landowner. Despite his protests of innocence, the pilgrim was sentenced to death. As he was about to be hanged, he prayed to St. James, and miraculously, the rooster flew out of his bag and crowed. The pilgrim was released, and the rooster became a symbol of good luck and prosperity.
