In this Travel Through Food restaurant review, we visited local Filipino restaurant, Punk-o Punk-o where we tasted some traditional and not-so-traditional foods from the Philippines. In case you are wondering about the name, Filipino pungko, is a typical street food concept from Cebu, the region where Jerine (the restaurant owner and chef) is from.

The Food

The style of food making and the food associated with it have evolved over many centuries from their Austronesian origins (shared with Malaysian and Indonesian cuisines) to a mixed cuisine of Chinese, Spanish and American influences, in line with the major waves of influence that had enriched the cultures of the archipelago.

The Reviews

I have never tried Philippine food before and did not know what to expect, I am generally food adventurous, however. I was pleased with the Tuna tartar dish I ordered. It was imaginative and delicious. The tuna was very good and the avocado was just the right amount of ripe. I would have preferred a little more wasabi, though. Wasabi was listed in the highlights of the dish, so I expected to taste a little more of it. We also ordered the vegetarian Somosas and I thought they were a little bland and overcooked. They needed a kick of something to make them tastier. My husband, Bill, ordered the Bjumbi lamb and was very pleased with it. He liked the fact that it was flavorful, the lamb was well cooked and had just the right amount of spice for him. We probably won’t go back as there weren’t enough dishes we really liked to go back for.

The food was quite tasty, fresh and well-prepared We sampled a variety of offerings: ngohoing, pan bao de pato, brocheta de pollo, costillas de cerdo. We liked all of it. The service was good; the waitstaff were helpful. It was a fun evening.
