Best Burgers in Valencia
The Hunt for the Best Burgers in Valencia
A hamburger is more than a grilled beef patty served in a split bun, with melted cheddar cheese, a slice of tomato, lettuce and condiments like mustard and ketchup. There are many theories about the origin of the hamburger. The one that is most plausible to us is that it originates from Hamburg, Germany.
It’s believed that it started with the Hamburg steak, a beef dish named after the German city. The dish is made with chopped ground beef that’s shaped into a patty and cooked – basically a burger without the bread.
The main difference, however, is the Hamburg steak can also be served up raw – most probably because the Germans got the idea for it in the first place after sailors travelled to Russia and were inspired by their steak tartare.
Hamburg was a popular port of departure for Germans emigrating to the US back in the early 18th century and it seems they took their beloved dish with them. Apparently, someone decided to put their Hamburg steak between two slices of bread and the hamburger was born.
It was reported that in 1836, the first printed menu in the US included the Hamburg steak and, at 10 cents, it was the most expensive meal going.
