Extramurs
Welcome to Extramurs, a vibrant district in Valencia divided into four unique neighborhoods: Arrancapins, el Botanic, la Petxina, and la Roqueta. Extramurs is located just west of the historic city center and has a long and rich history that dates back to Roman times.
Extramurs was recognized as the whole area that was outside the ancient walls of Valencia and was therefore named as such. Its north border is with Bellor, the east with Ciutat Vella and Esanche, the south with Jesus and the west with Patraix and L’Olivereta.
During the Middle Ages, Extramurs was an important district of Valencia, with a thriving economy and a significant Jewish population. However, in the 15th century, the neighborhood was devastated by a series of wars and epidemics, which led to a decline in its prosperity.
In the 19th century, Extramurs began to experience a resurgence as the city expanded and new residential neighborhoods were developed. Many of the buildings in the neighborhood were constructed during this period, giving it a distinctive architectural style that blends traditional and modern elements.
Today, Extramurs is a bustling and diverse neighborhood with a mix of residential, commercial, and cultural areas. It is home to many young professionals and families, attracted by the neighborhood’s central location and affordable housing. The neighborhood has a strong sense of community and is known for its lively street life, with many bars, restaurants, and shops lining its main streets.
One of the most significant landmarks in Extramurs is the Estació del Nord, a beautiful modernist train station designed by the architect Demetrio Ribes. The station is a popular meeting point for locals and visitors alike and is an important transportation hub for the city.
Extramurs is a vibrant and evolving neighborhood that reflects the changing face of Valencia. Its rich history and distinctive architecture make it a fascinating place to explore and experience, while its modern amenities and lively atmosphere make it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.
