Best Ever Hamburger Recipe

Yield: 6

My go to recipe for ground beef hamburgers.

Ingredients

  • 800 grams ground beef, 1.75 lbs
  • 1 medium or large egg
  • 1/4 cup diced sweet onion
  • 78 ml quick oats, 1/3 cup
  • 2 tbsp Lea and Perrins Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp pepper
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 2 cloves pressed fresh garlic

Instructions

  1. In a large glass bowl, add egg, onion, garlic, Worcestershire Sauce, salt, pepper, and basil. Using a fork, beat all ingredients together.
  2. Add ground beef.
  3. Add oats.
  4. Mix with your hands until well combined.
  5. Divide the mixture into 6.
  6. Take 1/6 of the meat mixture and use your hands to press it into the shape of a hamburger patty that is about about 19mm (3/4") thick. Make an indention in the middle of the patty to prevent bulging in the center of the hamburger as it cooks. Repeat with the remaining meat mixture, making 6 hamburgers.
  7. Let the meat rest at room temperature until your barbeque or stove top grill heats up.

For a gas barbeque

  1. Turn on gas bbq until it reaches 200°C (400°F)
  2. Grill for about 2 minutes.
  3. Flip and grill for an additional 2 minutes.
  4. Flip again and brush on your favorite BBQ Sauce (ours is Hunts Sweet BBQ Sauce). Grill for about 1 minute.
  5. Flip again and brush with more BBQ sauce. Grill for 1 minute.
  6. Final flip, and add your favorite cheese(s) (cheddar, gouda, edam, provolone). Leave on the grill for another minute or until cheese begins to melt.
  7. Remove from grill and serve immediately.

Stove top grilling

  1. Use a grill pan. Brush with olive oil and heat to medium-high heat.
  2. The pan needs to be hot in order for the burgers to cook. To test if the pan is ready, splash with 1 drop of water. If it sizzles, the pan is ready.
  3. Grill for 3 minutes.
  4. Flip over and grill for 3 minutes.
  5. Flip again and brush on your favorite BBQ Sauce (ours is Hunts Sweet BBQ Sauce). Grill for about 1 minute.
  6. Flip again and brush with more BBQ sauce. Grill for 1 minute.
  7. Final flip, and add your favorite cheese(s) (cheddar, gouda, edam, provolone). Leave on the grill for another minute or until cheese begins to melt.
  8. Remove from pan and serve immediately.

How to serve the burgers

  1. Serve on your favorite hamburger buns.
  2. Additional topping ideas: fresh avocado slices, onions (fresh or caramelized), baby spinach or baby lettuce, sliced tomatoes, bread and butter pickles, sauteed mushrooms, crispy bacon.
  3. Condiment ideas: mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard (yellow or dijon), sweek pickle relish.

Notes

The times noted are based on medium-well burgers. Use less time if you prefer rare or medium doneness.
